Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Patoka, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Patoka that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
