Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Percy, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Percy which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
