Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Putnam, IL.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Putnam which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
