Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Ridge Farm, IL.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Ridge Farm that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
