Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Rock City, IL.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Rock City which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
