Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Rolling Meadows, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Rolling Meadows that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
