Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Secor, IL.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Secor that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
