Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Sherrard, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Sherrard which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
