Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Timewell, IL.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Timewell which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
