Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Topeka, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Topeka that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
