Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Wamac, IL.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Wamac that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
