Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Waterloo, IL.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Waterloo which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
