Medicare is a federal program which helps pay for medical healthcare services for individuals living in the Unites States who are either disabled or 65 years of age or older. Medicare consists of different "Parts", with Parts A-D covering different kinds of care.

Part A (Insurance for Hospital Stays) - Medicare Part A pays for inpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and up to 60 days in rehab without a co-pay but individuals will be required to pay a deductible. Medicare only covers 190 days of inpatient care total, this applies to the person's lifetime.

Part B (Medical Insurance) ? Medicare Part B pays up to 80% of the fees associated with outpatient drug and alcohol treatment. This includes outpatient services, therapy/counseling, treatment for co-occurring disorders such as anxiety disorders or depression and medications dispensed by clinics. It also pays for professional intervention services.

Part C (Medicare-approved Private Insurance) Medicare Part D is an option for individuals who want additional coverage aside from Medicare Parts A, B, and D. Individuals who have Part C may have more options available to them, but out-of-pocket costs and coverage is different and may be more expensive.

Part D (Prescription Insurance) Medicare Part D pays for substance abuse related medications. Including medications associated with treating withdrawal symptoms during detoxification as well as medications required for maintenance therapy such as methadone or buprenorphine.
