Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Atwood, KS.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Atwood which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
