Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Axtell, KS.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Axtell that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
