Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Bern, KS.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Bern which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
