Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Burns, KS.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Burns which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
