Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Dwight, KS.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Dwight that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
