Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Englewood, KS.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Englewood which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
