Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Fairway, KS.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Fairway which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
