Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Iuka, KS.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Iuka which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
