Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Lamont, KS.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Lamont that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
