Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Medicine Lodge, KS.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Medicine Lodge which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
