Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - New Century, KS.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in New Century that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
