The military currently uses a military insurance known as Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families obtain health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides benefits for retired military who are 60 years of age or older and their qualified family members. With Tricare Standard they go to any non-military health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay an annual deductible and coinsurance, in addition to any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is an option available to Tricare Standard beneficiaries which grants access to civilian health care professionals within their provider network, with a discounted coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all qualified family members, and with this they can pick a primary care physician and obtain referrals to health care services that offer specialty care.
By way of TRICARE, military members can obtain substance abuse treatment services in Ottawa. This includes detoxification, individual and group therapy including family therapy, and other various rehab services. They will need pre-authorization for treatment and there will most likely be some restrictions. Military insurance pays for both inpatient and outpatient, but stays for detoxification are restricted to 7 days. An inpatient or partial hospitalization following detoxification will only be authorized if it is an approved facility, and there are time limits as to how long military insurance carriers are permitted to remain in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is typically permitted. Additionally, there are 15 family therapy sessions and 60 group therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which take place on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has completed prior treatment services such as outpatient or inpatient treatment.
