Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Paradise, KS.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Paradise that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
