Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Richmond, KS.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Richmond which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
