Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Robinson, KS.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Robinson which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
