Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Scammon, KS.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Scammon which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
