Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Sharon Springs, KS.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Sharon Springs that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
