Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Wamego, KS.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Wamego which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
