Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Westmoreland, KS.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Westmoreland that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
