Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Brookline, MA.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Brookline which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
