Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Drury, MA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Drury that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
