Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - East Boston, MA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in East Boston that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
