Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - East Longmeadow, MA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in East Longmeadow that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
