Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Gardner, MA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Gardner which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
