Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Groveland, MA.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Groveland which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
