Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.
There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.
