Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Mattapoisett, MA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Mattapoisett that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
