Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - North Adams, MA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in North Adams that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
