Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Ocean Bluff, MA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Ocean Bluff which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
