Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Rockland, MA.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Rockland that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
