Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Rowe, MA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Rowe that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
