Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Sagamore, MA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Sagamore which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
