Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - South Lancaster, MA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in South Lancaster that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
