Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Spencer, MA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Spencer that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
