Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - West Tisbury, MA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in West Tisbury that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
