The armed forces currently uses a military insurance called Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families receive health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard offers benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 years of age or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they go to any civilian health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay yearly deductible and coinsurance, as well as any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is available to Tricare Standard beneficiaries which provides access to non-military health care professionals within their provider network, with a discounted coinsurance amount. Through TRICARE, military members can acquire drug and alcohol treatment services in Timonium. This includes detoxification, individual and group therapy including family therapy, and other various treatment services. They will need pre-authorization for services and there are likely to be some limitations. Military insurance covers both inpatient and outpatient, but stays for detox are limited to no more than 7 days. An inpatient or partial hospitalization following detox will only be authorized if it is an approved facility, and there are time restrictions as to how long military insurance carriers will be permitted to remain in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is typically permitted. Additionally, there are 60 group therapy sessions and 15 family therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which are done on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has completed prior rehabilitation services such as inpatient or outpatient treatment.
