Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Bradley, ME.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Bradley that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
